Wine most popular alcoholic drink for a third of UK drinkers
A third of UK drinkers say wine is their favourite tipple, according to a new survey.
According to the YouGov data wine is more popular than beer which came second in the rankings at 25%, while spirits took third place.
And wine’s popularity has increased during lockdown, with sales up by 10% year on year in 2020 in the off-trade, while sparkling wine sales rose by 5%.
Of the 1,800 respondents to the survey, 43% of women plumped for wine as their favourite drink, compared to only 21% of men, while for the over 35’s, wine is their drink of choice compared to the under 35’s who prefer beer or spirits.
Those living in the South West of the country (39%) and East of England (34%) are the most likely to prefer wine compared to 32% of Londoners and 29% in the South East.
The most popular varietals are crisp dry whies such as Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc, with a full 41% choosing them as their favourits. Meanwhile, full bodied reds such as Malbec and Shiraz came in second place (39%), with Prosecco coming third at 30%.
However, there is a North/South divide in the country, with 46% of Scots and 48% of those in the North West most likely to choose a crisp dry white wine as their favourite, while those in the South West (50%) and London (44%) more likely to select a full bodied red.
